Star Anise Illicium verum (Schisandraceae) is a small tree with aromatic, star-shaped fruits. Not to be confused with Aniseed Pimpinella anisum (Apiaceae), while both are used in culinary applications--Star Anise is often is a traditional ingredient in Chinese five spice blends and Aniseed is used more in Mediterranean dishes. Star Anise pods have a stronger, hotter, more pungent, more bitter, and much more “licorice-like” flavor than the European Anise, and are considered warming.

Product Description
Common names for this eight-pointed, star-shaped fruit of a tree in magnolia family include Chinese Star Anise and Takkola--it is native to China and Vietnam and pods are picked and dried before ripening. Small amounts are recommended as Anise Star pods are a powerful spice. Use caution and be aware of the more toxic version, Japanese Star Anise (Illicium anisatum) which can cause serious side effects.
